AirAsia is a Malaysian multinational low-cost airline. AirAsia operates scheduled domestic and international flights to more than 165 destinations spanning 25 countries.

The challenge

AirAsia required a modern mobile solution for ground staff that simplified key workflows such as bag tagging, security checks, and seat assignment without being hindered by inconsistent airport connectivity.

Streamlining Check-in to Boarding

AirAsia needed a way to accelerate passenger flow through the airport by optimizing fragmented processes such as bag tag printing, security checks, and passenger boarding assistance. The existing methods were creating bottlenecks.

Complex System & Hardware Integration

The required mobile application had to seamlessly integrate with AirAsia’s complex, on-premise systems and, critically, connect with existing handheld printing devices for immediate bag tag generation.

The ground staff mobile application needed to be highly responsive and easy to use, maintaining performance and reliability despite the constantly varying and often challenging network conditions across the entire airport environment.

The result

Over a six-month engagement, CodeLink successfully delivered the RedAirport application, which was first rolled out at the AirAsia terminal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We moved beyond the initial scope (bag tag printing) to deliver multiple subsequent releases, all within a single, powerful mobile application.

The RedAirport application now manages key passenger service points: bag tag printing, ID checks, security screening, seat assignment, and final boarding. This single mobile solution creates a streamlined, faster experience for both staff and passengers.

Successful System & Hardware Integration

We successfully engineered the application, built on React Native, to integrate with existing AirAsia backend systems and essential on-premise handheld printing devices. This ensured the app was immediately practical and enabled real-time bag tag printing.
